Features

iMac has always harnessed the latest technology — and taken it further — to make the ultimate all-in-one better and better. And the Retina display is a testament to that. We pushed the limits of pixel density so you can see everything with pinpoint accuracy. We questioned every method of integrated design to achieve a remarkable level of fit and finish. The result? A beautiful, impossibly thin display of colour and contrast — and zero compromise.

Precision. Repeated 9.4 million times
Something that 9.4 million pixels makes exceedingly clear. As does a 1.4mm-thin display panel designed around the human eye — so every interaction feels as natural as can be.

Wider Colour Palette True-to-life colour. Alive onscreen.
Many of the brilliant, unique colours you see in the real world never make it to your screen.  A striking 25 per cent more. So whether it’s a sunset at the beach or your favourite football team’s shirts, you’ll see them just as you saw them — on a display that’s more vibrant than ever.

25 per cent more available colours. 100 per cent jaw-dropping.
To see colour as it appears in real life, you’ve got to capture the ones you’re missing. And a wider colour gamut does just that. Retina moves well beyond the typical sRGB display with an all-new P3 colour gamut. This is achieved by shifting the Retina display away from standard white LEDs to advanced red-green phosphor LEDs. Now all three colours — red, green and blue — are more equally represented and show off real-world colour with more balance and precision.

The colour you shoot is the colour you see.
Many cameras, including DSLRs and professional video cameras, can capture a far wider range of colour than the typical sRGB colour gamut. And with a new P3-based wider gamut, the iMac Retina display is able to bring more of those real-world colours to the screen. So go back and reprocess those RAW images you’ve saved — and reveal colour you haven’t seen in them before.

Engineering
Innovation.
On top of innovation.
On top of innovation.
Engineering the Retina display involved the precise calibration of 23 layers that make up a display panel that’s just 1.4mm thin. And out of that process we made advancements to improve not only the resolution but also the quality of the entire iMac display. So in addition to the incredible detail, you’ll see blacker blacks, more vivid colours, and images that practically jump off the screen.

Orchestrating the performance of 9.4 million pixels.
A more advanced timing controller. The timing controller, or TCON, is the brains of the display — it tells each pixel what to do and when to do it.

Clearing the way for signal quality.
Organic passivation. With so many pixels on Retina display screens, clear communication between them requires organic passivation, or ‘overpass’ technology. It separates the pixels from the signals that tell them when and how to light up, preventing any ‘cross-talk’, or interference, that could result from putting so many pixels so close together. This maintains the quality of the image onscreen while those signals are being transmitted.

Delivering true-to-life imagery from every angle.
Photo alignment
To improve on-axis contrast, we implemented an advanced process called photo alignment. This involves shining UV light to create a uniform terrain across the film coating on the TFT and colour filter, so when the liquid crystal molecules are exposed, they lie exactly where they should. Better-aligned molecules mean you see better contrast when you’re directly in front of the display.

Compensation ?lm
A display like this is the kind that people gather around. And at this size, even when you’re looking at the centre of the screen, you see the corners at an angle, or off-axis. To make sure the contrast is perfect from every angle, we use a compensation film that controls how the light exits the display. The result is a display with truer colours, no matter where you view it from.

Enclosure
5 millimetres thin. Just the right size to do something big.
The first iMac was a revolution: an all-in-one computer that put everything — display, processor, graphics, storage, memory and more — inside one simple, stylish enclosure. Today’s iMac includes the most advanced, most brilliant desktop display we’ve ever built, and it’s filled with the latest high-performance technologies. Yet it’s still just 5mm thin at its edge.

Seamless design.
One of the biggest challenges our engineers faced with the iMac enclosure was how to join the front to the back. The enclosure is so thin, it’s not possible to weld the pieces using traditional methods. So we utilised a process called friction-stir welding. It combines intense friction-generated heat and pressure to intermix the molecules of the two aluminium surfaces — creating a seamless, precise and super-strong join.

Environmentally friendly.
iMac is free of many harmful toxins, including mercury, arsenic, beryllium, BFRs and PVC. It’s also made from materials such as aluminium and glass, which are more likely to be recycled and reused. In fact, the iMac base is made from 30 per cent recycled aluminium and the iMac speaker enclosure is made with 30 per cent post-consumer recycled plastic.

Responsibly designed.
As a result of all our efforts, iMac far exceeds the stringent low power requirements set by the US Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), giving it ENERGY STAR 6.1 qualification. And it has earned the highest rating of Gold from EPEAT, which evaluates the environmental impact of a product based on how recyclable it is, how much energy it uses, and how it’s designed and manufactured.

Built for speed. And everything else.
You know iMac by its incredibly thin enclosure. But that just sets the stage for massive performance. With a new Intel Core processor, the latest AMD graphics, an advanced Fusion Drive and Thunderbolt 2, iMac delivers lightning-fast speed. And striking power.

Ultra-fast flash
For maximum performance, you can configure iMac with up to 1TB of PCIe-based flash storage that’s now up to 2.5 times faster than the previous version.2 Delivering up to 1800 Mbps of sequential read performance, pure flash storage is the fastest way to speed through the most demanding tasks.

OS X.
It’s what makes a Mac a Mac.

OS X is the operating system that powers every Mac. Built on a rock-solid UNIX foundation, it’s engineered to take full advantage of what the hardware is capable of. It’s designed to be as easy to use as it is beautiful to look at. It comes with an amazing collection of apps you’ll use — and love — every day. And it enables your Mac and iOS devices to work wonderfully together.

Easy to learn. Easy to use.
On a Mac, it’s easy to find, share and do just about everything. You can control your Mac with simple, intuitive gestures. The Dock lets you launch your favourite apps with a click. Launchpad gives you quick access to your full library of apps. The Finder lets you browse and organise your files on your Mac and in iCloud with ease. Spotlight search makes locating documents, launching apps and looking up information effortless.1 You can even have your apps and the operating system software update automatically. In fact, a Mac does so many things automatically, sometimes you don’t have to do anything at all.

Every detail considered. And reconsidered.
Over the years, OS X has changed in many ways. But the principles that define it haven’t: power, simplicity, beauty. Across-the-board refinements have made OS X El Capitan even more powerful and easier to use, while maintaining the elements essential to Mac. As with every Apple product, each detail is obsessed over: from the distinctive icons in the Dock to the streamlined toolbars to the fluidity of navigating everything from photos to web pages. Because when it comes to a great experience, the difference is in the details.

Control your Mac with a click, swipe or press.
The Multi-Touch trackpad unique to the Mac makes gestures easy and smooth — so using your fingers to tap, scroll, pinch and swipe feels perfectly natural. These Multi-Touch gestures are a fundamental part of your experience, which makes everything you do on your Mac simple, intuitive and fun.

Software and hardware
made for each other.

OS X is built to bring out the best in your Mac, so you get a fully integrated system in which everything works together seamlessly. It works with the processor and graphics controller in your Mac to deliver the best possible performance. It works with the super-responsive trackpad in Mac notebooks, so Multi-Touch gestures feel natural to use. OS X even keeps your Mac up to date while it sleeps.2 Advanced power-saving technologies help extend battery life. And in OS X El Capitan, new system fonts are designed to look crisp and vivid on high-resolution Retina displays.

Amazing apps for everyday things.
With every new Mac, you get a collection of powerful productivity and creativity apps: Pages, Keynote, Numbers, Photos, iMovie and GarageBand. And you get more great apps for the things you do every day: surf the web, make video calls, send messages, get driving directions, manage your contacts, access your email and more. If you already use an iPhone or iPad, they’ll feel instantly familiar. Because they’re native apps — not web apps in a browser — they also take full advantage of the power of your Mac to deliver the fastest possible performance. And with the Mac App Store built in, it’s easy to find even more great apps.

If you use an iPhone, you’ll love what you can do with a Mac.
A Mac will work with your iPhone in ways no other computer can. You can make and receive iPhone calls on your Mac, even if your iPhone is in another room. Send and receive both iMessage and SMS text messages on your Mac. Start an email, document or browsing session on one device and instantly pick it up on another. And turn on the Personal Hotspot on your iPhone from your Mac so you can get online in an instant.

iCloud. Everything you love, everywhere you go.
With iCloud, your data is kept up to date on all your devices.4 So a contact or a calendar event you add on your iPhone also appears on your Mac. You can send driving directions from your Mac to your iPhone. Add a meeting to your calendar on your Mac and receive an alert on your iPad. Even start a Messages conversation on your iPhone and finish it on your Mac. If you’re an Apple Music member, your entire library lives in the cloud, so you can always access all your music without it taking up any space on your devices. And iCloud Drive lets you access all your documents on your Mac and iOS devices and even on a PC. So your files will go wherever you do.

Security was our ?rst thought.
Not an afterthought.
OS X is engineered with advanced technologies that are constantly working together to keep your Mac and the information on it safe. Gatekeeper makes it safer to download and install apps from the web. FileVault safeguards data using powerful encryption. Sandboxing helps protect your system by isolating apps from each other, as well as from your system and your data. Customisable privacy settings keep your personal information under your control. Find My Mac helps you locate your Mac on a map, set a passcode remotely and more. The best way to keep your Mac secure is to keep your software up to date. The Mac App Store notifies you when an update is available. And because OS X El Capitan is a free upgrade, it’s easy to keep your Mac safe with the latest security features and enhancements.

Compatible with Windows.
The versatility and power of OS X help a Mac fit in just about anywhere — including Windows networks. Want to transfer your files, photos and other data from a Windows PC? OS X lets you do that easily with Migration Assistant. If you want to run Windows on your Mac, you can do that with Boot Camp.5 OS X has built-in support for Microsoft Exchange, so you can use your Mac at home and at work and keep all your messages, meetings and contacts in sync. And of course, you can work with popular file types such as JPG, MP3 and PDF, as well as Microsoft Word, Excel and PowerPoint documents.

Accessibility built in.
OS X comes as standard with a wide range of assistive technologies that help people with disabilities experience what the Mac has to offer, including many features you won’t find in other operating systems — at any price. For example, the built-in VoiceOver screen reader, available in over 30 languages, makes it possible for those who are blind or have low vision to control their computers using key commands or gestures on a Multi-Touch trackpad. Switch Control makes it easier to navigate menus and operate basic controls such as volume, brightness, eject and media playback. OS X also offers out-of-the-box support for more than 50 braille displays (including Bluetooth displays) and many other accessibility features, such as dynamic full-screen magnification, playback of closed captions, and a scalable screen.
